Start of Something Fresh at the Markham Fairgounds

posted May 29, 2014, 7:35 PM by Stouffville GroupCommissioner

The Markham Fair community garden is beginning to take shape! The soil has been prepared, the plots staked out, and compost and mulch will be delivered this week! But what is a community garden anyway? According to the Markham Sustainability Plan, a community garden is “a single piece of land gardened collectively by a group of people. It is managed and maintained with the active participation of the gardeners themselves rather than by a professional staff and food production is encouraged”. For the Markham Fair, this means offering up 18 plots on our grounds (for a small fee of $25) to community members who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to plant a garden. We envision these plots growing healthy food, teaching our youth about local agriculture and sustainability, and bringing together people from all backgrounds and walks of life!
